ISU research paper in Acta Astronautica indicates that the number of spaceflight participants is larger than commonly believed, i.e 85 as of Jan 2014, or 1 out of 6 individuals who have flown in space. These non-career astronauts include payload specialists, guest or research cosmonauts, educators, journalist, and space tourists.
